Weekend Adventures: January 26 – 28

On Saturday, downtown Saline is hosting their Annual Winterfest.  At Rolling Hills Park, Saturday afternoon, there is the annual ‘Snow Much Fun!’ event, as well!  Many more, exciting adventure, below!

FRIDAY Events (1/26): sun and clouds; highs in the upper-40s

Public Skate at Yost Ice Arena: From Noon to 1 PM, at Yost Ice Arena (entrance of State St.), cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children/students.  Skate rental is available for $3 as well.

Movie and Popcorn with Kids: From 2 to 3:30, at the Dexter Public Library, children are invited to view the LEGO Ninjago Movie (rated PG).  This is a FREE event for all!

FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 4:30 to 5:30 PM, at FitPoint (off Eisenhower), this class gets kids moving with cross training and strengthening, and a variety of explosiveness, agility, balance and flexibility exercises. It builds skills for any sport, or helps kids just be fit and healthy!  This class is intended for ages 7 – 13.  Check their calendar for when the class is available and there are drop-in classes too!

Pet and Pajamas Movie Night: From 5 to 9 PM, this paw-tastic event is appropriate for ages 5 to 11 and will include adoptable animal interactions, a cheese pizza dinner and an animal themed movie with popcorn! Children are invited to wear their pajamas, bring a sleeping bag and pillow and be ready for some animal-themed fun while parents enjoy a night out on the town! Pets and Pajamas Movie Night is offered once a month and is a great way for children to enjoy some after hours time at HSHV!  Cost is $35 for the first child and $15 for each additional child.  Please call us for details regarding this evening’s movie selection! 734-661-3575

Kids Zumba: From 6:30 to 7:30 PM, at Peachy Fitness (2385 S. Huron), the Zumba® Kids program is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans boys & girls ages 6-13, where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This program features age-appropriate music and moves that get kids movin’ to the beat. Family Swim at Goldfish Swim School:  From 7 PM to 8 PM, Goldfish Swim School (2107 W. Stadium Blvd.) offers family swim for all!  Cost is $5 per a person or $15 per a family.

Buhr Outdoor Ice Rink: Open Skate: From 7:15 to 8:45 PM, at Buhr’s Outdoor Ice Rink (2781 Packard Rd.), there will be public skating available.  The facility has a heated lobby, vending, restrooms and four separate locker rooms for hockey.  Cost is $5 for adults and $4 for children.  Skate rentals is $3.  Skate learners are FREE.

Family Yoga: From 9:45 to 10:30 AM, at Peachy Fitness, this class is for parents and children, ages 3 -10.  Uplifting and supportive, this class provides gentle yet profound techniques to help build strength, flexibility and body awareness. Through mindfulness and self-acceptance, discover ways to de-stress from the pressures and expectations of daily life. Winter Science Series: Aquatic Aces: At 10 AM, at Hudson Mills Metropark Activity Center (8801 N. Territorial Rd.), you might be surprised what you can find at the bottom of a frozen Michigan pond! Learn how fish, reptiles, and amphibians defy ice through adaptations. Meet an American toad, then experiment with ice and do a craft too.  Recommended for ages 8 – 12.  Please preregister, 734-426-8211.  Cost is $7 per a child.

Junior Naturalist: Birds of Winter: From 10 to 12 PM, at County Farm Park, learn all about winter birds, what they eat, how they stay warm and how you can create your own bird habitat. Hike to observe birds, and build a birdfeeder to take home. Bring Binoculars if you have them, a few sets will be available to borrow. This hike led by Shawn Severance.  Space is limited and PLEASE NOTE REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE 24 HOURS PRIOR TO PROGRAM DATE.  This is a FREE event!  Click on the link above to preregister.

Winterfest 2018: From 10 to 3 PM, in downtown Saline, enjoy a daylong festival of indoor and outdoor winter activities, including an obstacle course, a family puzzle room, crafts, carnival games, broomball, street games, “Cold Butt Euchre,” a shooting gallery, and more.  This is a FREE event!

ScienceFest: It’s Not Magic, it’s Science!: From 10 to 4 PM, at the Hands-On Museum, become a hybrid of Albert Einstein and Harry Houdini in this mind-bending weekend. Learn how magic tricks all have a bit of science behind them. We will use magnetism to make objects levitate, write with invisible ink, and make water defy gravity.

Kids Club: Personalized Frame: From 1o to Noon, at Michael’s Craft Store (Arborland), kids can craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per project, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.  This Saturday’s craft is a Personalized Frame!

The Little Scientist Club: From 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, in the Green Room (lower level) of the Hands-On Museum, their youngest visitors will explore their sense of wonder about the world through observation and hands-on activities, science-themed stories, make-and-take projects, and much more. Older siblings are welcome, too, and registration is not necessary.

Yoga Storytime: From 10:30 to 11:30, at Ypsilanti’s Whittaker Storytime, children are invited to hear great stories and learn simple animated yoga poses to go with them. Children will build strength, coordination, and body awareness as they bark in downward dog, hiss in cobra pose, and flutter wings in butterfly.

Popsicle Stick Paper Dolls: From 11 to Noon, at the Traverwood Library Branch, kids in grades K – 5 are invited to use washi tape, buttons and trims and Popsicle sticks to make some adorable paper dolls.  Make a whole group, make a family!

Storytime with Linda Zimmer: Every Saturday, at 11 AM, join Linda Zimmer at Bookbound (1729 Plymouth Rd.) for a FREE story time.  This event is intended for children ages 6 and under!

Barnes and Noble Storytime: Oodles of Kittens: at 11 AM, at Barnes and Noble, Fancy Nancy returns in a story about felines, canines, and making new four-legged friends! Nancy’s new kitten meets her posh pup, Frenchy. Will her two pets ever get along? Will Nancy be able to love them both the same? Find out at Storytime, with activities to follow.

Drop-in Winter Castle: From 11 to Noon, at the Dexter Public Library, kids and teens are invited to design and decorate your own winter castle using cardboard and a variety of craft materials.  This is a FREE event!

The Muppet Movie:  At 11:30 AM, at the State Theater, The Muppet Movie will be shown as part of the Toyota Family-Friendly Film Series at Michigan Theater. It is definitely a good idea to reserve your seats, as some seats are already sold out.  Kids ages 12 and under receive free admission. Regular ticket prices will apply for adults ($10) & teens ($8).

Snow Much Fun!: From 1 to 4 PM, at Rolling Hills County Park (Ypsilanti), enjoy an afternoon of family-friendly winter activities, including a petting zoo, face painting, cross-country skiing, and sledding.  This will all be followed by a craft in the Lodge and hot chocolate by a campfire. FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 1 to 2 PM, at FITPoint (250 W. Eisenhower), this class encourages children, ages 7 to 13, to have fun and be creative with movement! This is an important age when coordination, balance, hand-eye coordination is developed!  Although there are class packages, drop-ins can pay $20 a class, AND the first week of classes is FREE for new visitors to FitPoint!

Open Swim at Mack Pool: From 1 to 5 PM, at Mack Pool (715 Brooks St.), there is open swim to the public.  Admission to Mack Pool is $5/adult, $4 for youth (ages 4-17) & seniors (55+). Children 3 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.

Creature Encounters: Sloth: From 1 to 5 PM, at The Creature Conservancy (4950 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd.), The Creature Conservancy is featuring Poco, the sloth, for the month of January!  See the sloth for a special presentation on the Stone Stage each Saturday and Sunday – at 2:00 PM and again at 4:00 PM.  Admission is $6 for children (2-12) and $8 for adults.  There are MANY other, exotic animals to visit as well!

Meet Marshall: From 2 to 4, at Learning Express of Ann Arbor (Westgate Shopping Center), children of ALL ages are invited to meet Marshall, from Paw Patrol.  Bring your camera for this wonderful meet and greet opportunity.  This is a FREE event!

Hand Balancing and Contortion: From 2:30 to 3:30, at Aviary: Aerial and Circus Arts (2875 Boardwalk), ground acrobatics are the foundation of flying. This all level class is designed for active young people (ages 8 – 12) to build the courage for inversions and the strength to stay upside down. Students will learn to balance on their hands, create absurd shapes, and find their bendiest self. Each class includes 15-20 minutes of warm-up and stretching, followed by practicing hand balancing and contortion fundamentals.  Cost is $15.  This is not a drop in class, all student MUST please register via the included link before arriving to class.

Board Game Afternoon: From 2:30 to 5:30, at the Downtown Library Branch, enjoy an afternoon of board games in the Secret Lab!  Games will include: Oregon Trail, Ticket to Ride, Yeti in my Spaghetti, Dominion, Sushi Go, Stratego, Grand Austria Hotel, Space Team, and more.  You are also welcome to bring your own games to play in AADL’s cool makerspace.

Tool Zoo: at 4:40 and 5:30, at Maker Works (3765 Plaza Drive), join us at for the Tool Zoo!  We’ll take an after-hours tour around our shop so you can see the tools in action.  We’ll demonstrate a variety of things, like 3D printing, pewter casting, laser cutting, wood engraving, and plasma cutting real steel!  Each family will take home examples made while you watch.  The cost is $5 a person or $8 a family.  Please sign up ahead of time, by clicking the link above.

Nature Storytime: Chirp, Peep, Caw!: From 10 to 11, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center (Traver Rd.), Nature Storytime has many opportunities for you and your little one to explore and appreciate the outdoors, such as live animal visits, hikes, stories, and hands-on activities. This week we will explore sounds outside, and make our own sounds.  Each session includes indoor and outdoor activities – so make sure to dress for the weather!  Cost is $5 and recommended for ages 1 – 5, with a caregiver.  Pre-registration is recommended. Critter House at Leslie Science and Nature center: From 10 AM t0 1 PM, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center (1831 Traver Rd.), you are invited to observe frogs, turtles, snakes, and more as they hop, crawl, and slither in their homes!  If you do not see an animal in the Critter House when you stop by they are either out educating a group or just taking turns in the exhibit room.  You can visit the critter house FREE of charge!

Preschool Expo: From 1 to 4 PM, at the Downtown Library, looking for a preschool? The annual Preschool Expo brings representatives from area preschools to one location on one date. Explore your options and find the best preschool for your child.  This is a POPULAR and excellent event for parents with perspective preschoolers!

Drawing For Kids: From 1 to 2 PM, at the Pittsfield Library Branch, join us for a directed drawing activity for youth with artists from the Ann Arbor Art Center! Be sure to check aadl.org for themes and projects.  This is a FREE event for grades 1 – 5.

Dragons Love Tacos: At 1:30, at the Michigan Theater (Liberty St.), this renowned NYC-based children’s theater troupe returns to the Michigan Theater to present its musical based on Adam Rubin’s best-selling kids book about the trouble that ensues after a dragon with a taco obsession accidentally eats spicy salsa. Recommended for theatergoers in grades K-3 & their families.  Tickets are $13 (in advance or at the door).

Guided Meditation for Kids: From 2 to 3, at the Traverwood Library Branch, whether it is stress, anxiety, or the occasional moodiness, kids can benefit from quieting their mind as much as adults.  Local massage therapist and meditation leader Amy Tarrant will lead kids through a series of guided meditations to encourage calmness and more. Meditation at a young age plants the seed of a lifelong resource for dealing with stress or hard situations. At the end of the session children will have a chance to process what they experienced through artistic expression.  Attendees are welcome to bring a pillow or blanket with them for added comfort. Parents are encouraged to attend.
