Weekend Adventures: January 19 – 21

Several, great musical events taking place this weekend: Kinder Concerts, Friends in Song and Story (an annual, popular event!), dance parties at Kidopolis and much more!  Check out dates, times, and locations below!

FRIDAY Events (1/19): partly cloudy; highs in the mid-30s

Kinder Concert: With performances at 10 and 11 PM, at the Downtown Library Branch (multi-purpose room), learn about the viola from Jacqueline Hanson and the piano from Kathryn Goodson, and listen, dance and hear a story with Gari Stein. Enjoy the music of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra! Another Kinder Concert session will be offered at 11:00 am.

Kiddie Disco: From 11 to 1 PM, at Kidopolis (State Circle), join in on a Kiddie Disco (select Fridays).  There will be a dance party, under the disco ball!  Cost is $7 per a child; $5 or each additional child (includes a snack!).

Little Ones Go Time: From 11 to Noon, at Ypsilanti’s Whittaker Library Branch, children, ages 1 – 6, are invited to drop in for open play during the cold weather months. Your child can run, slide, crawl, and tumble on our mats. We’ll do a guided activity once during the hour.

Public Skate at Yost Ice Arena: From Noon to 1 PM, at Yost Ice Arena (entrance of State St.), cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children/students.  Skate rental is available for $3 as well.

FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 4:30 to 5:30 PM, at FitPoint (off Eisenhower), this class gets kids moving with cross training and strengthening, and a variety of explosiveness, agility, balance and flexibility exercises. It builds skills for any sport, or helps kids just be fit and healthy!  This class is intended for ages 7 – 13.  Check their calendar for when the class is available and there are drop-in classes too!

Kids Zumba: From 6:30 to 7:30 PM, at Peachy Fitness (2385 S. Huron), the Zumba® Kids program is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans boys & girls ages 6-13, where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This program features age-appropriate music and moves that get kids movin’ to the beat. It’s all about feeling fearless on the dance floor, reinforcing the idea that it’s okay to just be yourself and dance like no one’s watching!  Cost is $15 for a drop-in or 3 classes for $30.  Please note that all classes at the Peachy Fitness Studio requires a 24-HOUR reservation.  Call 734 – 681 – 0477 or email info@peachyfitness.com to make a reservation.

Family Swim at Goldfish Swim School:  From 7 PM to 8 PM, Goldfish Swim School (2107 W. Stadium Blvd.) offers family swim for all!  Cost is $5 per a person or $15 per a family.

Buhr Outdoor Ice Rink: Open Skate: From 7:15 to 8:45 PM, at Buhr’s Outdoor Ice Rink (2781 Packard Rd.), there will be public skating available.  The facility has a heated lobby, vending, restrooms and four separate locker rooms for hockey.  Cost is $5 for adults and $4 for children.  Skate rentals is $3.  Skate learners are FREE.

Family Mew-vie Night: From 7:30 to 9:30, at Tiny Lions Lounge and Adoption Center (Jackson Rd.), this program will provide a place for your family to snuggle with cats while enjoying popcorn and a family friendly movie, rated G or PG.   Cost is $10 per person (adults and children).  Guests are welcome to bring any pillows, sleeping bags or blankets that you may wish to use. Guests may also bring snacks or drinks of their choice. Popcorn and water will be included in the program.  Additional concessions such as pop and candy will be available for $1.50 each.

Family Yoga: From 9:45 to 10:30 AM, at Peachy Fitness, this class is for parents and children, ages 3 -10.  Uplifting and supportive, this class provides gentle yet profound techniques to help build strength, flexibility and body awareness. Through mindfulness and self-acceptance, discover ways to de-stress from the pressures and expectations of daily life. City of Ann Arbor Recycling Craft: Plastics and Looking Out for Wildlife: From 10 to Noon, at the Pittsfield Library Branch, you’re invited to transform a plastic container into a winter feeder or shelter for backyard wildlife and use alternatives to plastic to create a compostable version. Learn about threats plastics pose to wildlife, why and how plastics are handled at the recycling center, and try your hand sorting recyclables on our portable conveyor.  This FREE event is intended for preschoolers – grade 5.

Sensory Storytime: From 10 to 11 AM, at Westgate Library Branch, storytime is for everyone!  This special storytime includes 20 minutes of interactive stories, rhymes, and movement, plus 40 minutes of adaptive free play!  This event is designed for young listeners (ages 3 – 7) with developmental disabilities and their friends and families.

Kinder Concert: At 10 AM, at the Dexter Public Library, families are invited, as music comes alive at KinderConcert, a 30 minute concert designed especially for children ages five and under. No worries about wiggly tots sitting still for a concert – they’ll dance and move while listening to the music.  Then they’ll be mesmerized by hearing a story being told with musical accompaniment.  Members of the A2SO join movement specialist Gari Stein and pianist Kathryn Goodson for a guided introduction to the instruments of the orchestra.  Registration is not required.

Pop-Up Makerspace: Paper Engineering: From 10 to 4 PM, at the Hands-In Museum, you’re invited to Design – Build – Test! Discover your inner engineer in our Pop-Up Makerspace. Today’s Challenge: Paper Engineering.

Kids Club: Pony Bead Snowflakes: From 1o to Noon, at Michael’s Craft Store (Arborland), kids can craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per project, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.  This Saturday’s craft is a Pony Bead Snowflake!

The Little Scientist Club: From 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, in the Green Room (lower level) of the Hands-On Museum, their youngest visitors will explore their sense of wonder about the world through observation and hands-on activities, science-themed stories, make-and-take projects, and much more. Older siblings are welcome, too, and registration is not necessary.

Saturday Morning Fever: From 10:30 to 11:30 AM, at Ypsilanti’s Whittaker Library Branch, families are invited to hear a music themed story, then dance your sillies out with shakers and scarves.

Storytime with Linda Zimmer: Every Saturday, at 11 AM, join Linda Zimmer at Bookbound (1729 Plymouth Rd.) for a FREE story time.  This event is intended for children ages 6 and under!

Superior Playgroup and Storytime: At 11 AM, at Ypsilanti’s Superior Library Branch, join us monthly for a wonderful morning of play and stories. Each month a new play set-up with different games and stories will have the little ones excited about learning. Every child will receive a free board book for participating.  This FREE event is intended for ages 1 – 5.

Barnes and Noble Storytime: You!: at 11 AM, at Barnes and Noble, a life full of adventure first requires big dreams, and big dreams need big encouragement. From world-renowned author and artist Sandra Magsamen comes the new book You!, offering inspiration and hope to readers of all ages. Activities to follow.

Public Skate at Yost Ice Arena: From 1 to 2:30 PM, at Yost Ice Arena (entrance of State St.), cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children/students.  Skate rental is available for $3 as well.

Veteran’s Memorial Indoor Ice Arena: From 1 to 2:30 PM, at Veteran’s Memorials Indoor Ice Arena (2150 Jackson Rd.), there will be public skating available.  The facility has a heated lobby, vending, restrooms and separate locker rooms for hockey.  Cost is $5 for adults and $4 for children.  Skate rentals is $3.  Skate learners are FREE.

FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 1 to 2 PM, at FITPoint (250 W. Eisenhower), this class encourages children, ages 7 to 13, to have fun and be creative with movement! This is an important age when coordination, balance, hand-eye coordination is developed!  Although there are class packages, drop-ins can pay $20 a class, AND the first week of classes is FREE for new visitors to FitPoint!  CLASSES START BACK IN THE WINTER!

Open Swim at Mack Pool: From 1 to 5 PM, at Mack Pool (715 Brooks St.), there is open swim to the public.  Admission to Mack Pool is $5/adult, $4 for youth (ages 4-17) & seniors (55+). Children 3 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.

Creature Encounters: Sloth: From 1 to 5 PM, at The Creature Conservancy (4950 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd.), The Creature Conservancy is featuring Poco, the sloth, for the month of January!  See the sloth for a special presentation on the Stone Stage each Saturday and Sunday – at 2:00 PM and again at 4:00 PM.  Admission is $6 for children (2-12) and $8 for adults.  There are MANY other, exotic animals to visit as well!

Hand Balancing and Contortion: From 2:30 to 3:30, at Aviary: Aerial and Circus Arts (2875 Boardwalk), ground acrobatics are the foundation of flying. This all level class is designed for active young people (ages 8 – 12) to build the courage for inversions and the strength to stay upside down. Students will learn to balance on their hands, create absurd shapes, and find their bendiest self. Each class includes 15-20 minutes of warm-up and stretching, followed by practicing hand balancing and contortion fundamentals.  Cost is $15.  This is not a drop in class, all student MUST please register via the included link before arriving to class.

Game of Life: From 3 to 4 PM, at Ypsilanti’s District Library (Michigan Program Room), families are invited to play a life-sized version of the Game of Life and explore money management with the whole family! Be sure to explore the Thinking Money exhibit when you visit.

Family Science Workshop: The Ever-Changing Earth: From 3 to 4 PM, at the Saline District Library, The U of M Museum of Natural History brings parent/child workshops to the library. Learn about plate tectonics, volcanoes, erosion and more! For ages 6-11. Children must be accompanied by a parent (be sure to register each child separately, by clicking on the link).

Family Dance Party: From 6:45 to 8:45 PM, Kidopolis (State Circle) is hosting a Saturday Night Family Dance Party every other week this winter.  Suitable for families with children ages 6 – 12.  Cost is $7 per a person, which includes pizza and snacks!

Winter Stargazing with Brian Ottum: From 7:30 to 9 PM, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center, families are invited to spend the evening stargazing in the warm comfort of our Energy House! Local astronomer Brian Ottum will show us live views of the moon, stars, and nebulae from his remote observatory in New Mexico on the Big Screen. If it’s a cloudy night in New Mexico, we will view images and video Brian has captured throughout the year. Popcorn and juice/soda are included.  Prints and images of the sky will be available for sale.  Cost is $5 per a person, must be 13 and older.  Register for this event online, or call 734-997-1553.

A Taste of HDS: Music, Music Everywhere: From 10 to 11 AM, at Hebrew Day School (2937 Birch Hollow Drive), join us as we explore the music of multiple cultures! Led by HDS instrumental teacher, Ben Kessler, this hands-on event will combine music, movement, and art as children listen to and learn about a variety of sounds and instruments. Taste of Hebrew Day School - Music

Ruff: Spinning Dot Theatre: With performances at 10, 10:35, and 11:10, at Cultivate Coffee and Taphouse (Ypsilanti), local actor Tyler Calhoun performs Spinning Dot associate artistic director Kelly Fielder’s 30-minute, interactive one-woman show about a dog and a stranded sailor’s magical adventure. There is also quite a bit of audience participation. Geared toward kids age 5 & under.  Suggested admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Critter House at Leslie Science and Nature center: From 10 AM t0 1 PM, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center (1831 Traver Rd.), you are invited to observe frogs, turtles, snakes, and more as they hop, crawl, and slither in their homes!  If you do not see an animal in the Critter House when you stop by they are either out educating a group or just taking turns in the exhibit room.  You can visit the critter house FREE of charge!

Migration Madness: From 10 to 11:30 AM, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center (Traver Rd.), families are invited to spread their wings and soar at this exciting program all about bird habitats and behavior. Map your own migratory path and learn why birds fly north and south to get what they need to survive. Complete challenges together and learn how to identify some of LSNC’s resident raptors and their wild counterparts. You’ll even leave with some tips for making your yard or neighborhood a better habitat for migrating birds!  Cost is $8 or $30 per a family (recommended for children, ages 5 – 12).   Register for this event online, or call 734-997-1553.

Dancing Babies with Dianne Dudley: From 1 to 1:40, at the Westgate Library Branch, Dianne, a teacher with Ann Arbor Public Schools, leads a program of music and motion!  This FREE event is intended for babies and preschoolers, up to age 5.

Drawing For Kids: From 1 to 2 PM, at the Downtown Library Branch (4th floor meeting room), join us for a directed drawing activity for youth with artists from the Ann Arbor Art Center! Be sure to check aadl.org for themes and projects.  This is a FREE event for grades 1 – 5.

Read Along Dog: Starting at 2 PM, at the Saline District Library, trained Therapaws reading dogs will be available for 15-minute reading appointments January-May. Practice reading with Summer! Registration is required; please stop by the Youth Desk or call 734-429-5450 ext. 3. Registration begins Jan. 8.
