Weekend Adventures: February 2 – 4

February has arrived!  Home Depot has their monthly, Kids Workshop, Saturday morning.  In addition, the Botanical Gardens has their annual Sweet Things event, Saturday morning and there is a Chinese New Year Celebration (downtown library), Saturday afternoon.

FRIDAY Events (2/2): Mostly cloudy; highs near 20

Groundhog Day Crafts for Kids: From 10 to 11 AM, the Dexter Public Library, kids ages five and under are invited to celebrate Groundhog Day at the Library.  We’re making groundhog dioramas and paper bag puppets.  Does your groundhog see his shadow? Registration is not required.

Kiddie Disco: From 11 to 1, at Kidopolis (509 S. State circle), you’re invited for play and dance, in this exciting play space!  Admission is $7 for the first child and $5 for each additional child.

Public Skate at Yost Ice Arena: From Noon to 1 PM, at Yost Ice Arena (entrance of State St.), cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children/students.  Skate rental is available for $3 as well.

FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 4:30 to 5:30 PM, at FitPoint (off Eisenhower), this class gets kids moving with cross training and strengthening, and a variety of explosiveness, agility, balance and flexibility exercises. It builds skills for any sport, or helps kids just be fit and healthy!  This class is intended for ages 7 – 13.  Check their calendar for when the class is available and there are drop-in classes too!

Pets and Pajamas Movie Night: From 5 to 9 PM, at the Humane Society of Huron Valley (3100 Cherry Hill), this paw-tastic event is appropriate for ages 5 to 11 and will include adoptable animal interactions, a cheese pizza dinner and an animal themed movie with popcorn! Children are invited to wear their pajamas, bring a sleeping bag and pillow and be ready for some animal-themed fun while parents enjoy a night out on the town! Pets and Pajamas Movie Night is offered once a month and is a great way for children to enjoy some after hours time at HSHV!  The cost is $35 for the first child, and $15 for each additional sibling.  Please call us for details regarding this evening’s movie selection! 734-661-3575.

Kids Zumba: From 6:30 to 7:30 PM, at Peachy Fitness (2385 S. Huron), the Zumba® Kids program is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans boys & girls ages 6-13, where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This program features age-appropriate music and moves that get kids movin’ to the beat. Family Swim at Goldfish Swim School:  From 7 PM to 8 PM, Goldfish Swim School (2107 W. Stadium Blvd.) offers family swim for all!  Cost is $5 per a person or $15 per a family.

Buhr Outdoor Ice Rink: Open Skate: From 7:15 to 8:45 PM, at Buhr’s Outdoor Ice Rink (2781 Packard Rd.), there will be public skating available.  The facility has a heated lobby, vending, restrooms and four separate locker rooms for hockey.  Cost is $5 for adults and $4 for children.  Skate rentals is $3.  Skate learners are FREE.

Kid’s Workshop: Valentine Bean Bag Toss: From 9 to Noon, at the Home Depot (Carpenter Rd.), score points with your loved ones and build a Valentine bean bag toss in this hands-on workshop. You and your child can construct a fun bean bag toss game for the whole family to love. Following the bean bag toss game board construction, your child can decorate it with paint and stickers.  All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. 

Family Yoga: From 9:45 to 10:30 AM, at Peachy Fitness, this class is for parents and children, ages 3 -10.  Uplifting and supportive, this class provides gentle yet profound techniques to help build strength, flexibility and body awareness. Through mindfulness and self-acceptance, discover ways to de-stress from the pressures and expectations of daily life. Kids Club: Valentine’s Day Love Bug: From 1o to Noon, at Michael’s Craft Store (Arborland), kids can craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per project, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.  This Saturday’s craft is a Valentine’s Day Love Bug!

Sweet Things: From 10 to noon, at the Botanical Gardens (Dixboro Rd.), chocolate, fruits, and natural sweeteners have been used to make treats for hundreds of years. Explore the world of sweets and learn to make a chocolate treat flavored with an assortment of sweet flavors. Pre-registration suggested. Registration includes activities and materials per person.  $10/child includes activities and materials.

World Language Storytime: From 10:30 to 11:30, at Ypsilanti’s Whittaker Library Branch, experience the diversity of Ypsi with stories in a different language each month! A native speaker of the language will read a story, which will be translated into English. Then we’ll have a craft or activity from another culture.

The Little Scientist Club: From 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, in the Green Room (lower level) of the Hands-On Museum, their youngest visitors will explore their sense of wonder about the world through observation and hands-on activities, science-themed stories, make-and-take projects, and much more. Older siblings are welcome, too, and registration is not necessary.

Storytime with Linda Zimmer: Every Saturday, at 11 AM, join Linda Zimmer at Bookbound (1729 Plymouth Rd.) for a FREE story time.  This event is intended for children ages 6 and under!

Yo-Yo Master Zeemo: From 1 to 3, at the Hands-On Museum, while just about everybody has played with a yo-yo, few master the variety of tricks required to be a yo-yo pro. Zeemo has “The World on a String” as he can perform over 200 different yo-yo tricks. In addition to yo-yos, Zeemo is also adept with other spinning toys such as hula-hoops, spin tops, frisbees and the amazing Chinese diabolo. Don’t miss this fun-filled performance that includes lots of audience participation!

FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 1 to 2 PM, at FITPoint (250 W. Eisenhower), this class encourages children, ages 7 to 13, to have fun and be creative with movement! This is an important age when coordination, balance, hand-eye coordination is developed!  Although there are class packages, drop-ins can pay $20 a class, AND the first week of classes is FREE for new visitors to FitPoint!

Open Swim at Mack Pool: From 1 to 5 PM, at Mack Pool (715 Brooks St.), there is open swim to the public.  Admission to Mack Pool is $5/adult, $4 for youth (ages 4-17) & seniors (55+). Children 3 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.

Creature Encounters: Crested Porcupine: From 1 to 5 PM, at The Creature Conservancy (4950 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd.), The Creature Conservancy is featuring the Crested Porcupines, for the month of February!  See the sloth for a special presentation on the Stone Stage each Saturday and Sunday – at 2:00 PM and again at 4:00 PM.  Admission is $6 for children (2-12) and $8 for adults.  There are MANY other, exotic animals to visit as well!

Chinese New Year Celebration: From 2 to 3:30, at the Downtown Library Branch, there will be Lion and children’s folk dance performances. You can learn to use a Chinese Yaogu drum, make fun crafts, and take home a traditional Chinese treat. This program is in partnership with the Ann-Hua School in Ann Arbor.  This is a FREE event for all families!

Fabulous Folktales: A Celebration for Kids celebrating the 2018 Washtenaw Reads: From 2 to 2:30, at the Downtown Library Branch, join AADL storyteller Elizabeth as she shares folktales from West Africa in a special storytime for kids, created in conjunction with this year’s Washtenaw Reads. The Read this year is Homegoing, by Yaa Gyasi. Much of the book takes place in West Africa.  This FREE event is intended for preschoolers – grade 3.

Felt Flower Fun: From 2 to 3 PM, at the Traverwood Library Branch, older children are invited to make a variety of flowers that don’t require water!

Hand Balancing and Contortion: From 2:30 to 3:30, at Aviary: Aerial and Circus Arts (2875 Boardwalk), ground acrobatics are the foundation of flying. This all level class is designed for active young people (ages 8 – 12) to build the courage for inversions and the strength to stay upside down. Students will learn to balance on their hands, create absurd shapes, and find their bendiest self. Each class includes 15-20 minutes of warm-up and stretching, followed by practicing hand balancing and contortion fundamentals.  Cost is $15.  This is not a drop in class, all student MUST please register via the included link before arriving to class.

SUNDAY Events (2/4): AM snow showers; highs in the upper-20s

Critter House at Leslie Science and Nature center: From 10 AM t0 1 PM, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center (1831 Traver Rd.), you are invited to observe frogs, turtles, snakes, and more as they hop, crawl, and slither in their homes!  If you do not see an animal in the Critter House when you stop by they are either out educating a group or just taking turns in the exhibit room.  You can visit the critter house FREE of charge!

Superb-Owl Sunday:  From 10 to 1 PM, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center (Traver Rd.), come to Critter House Open Hours and then stop by for our Superb-Owl Sunday celebration! Stay for five minutes or an hour at this carnival-style event where you’ll learn how our wildlife staff prepare food for these nocturnal raptors and keep their enclosures safe and clean. Make enrichment toys for our birds to play with or dissect an owl pellet and reconstruct the skeleton inside. Have your picture taken with one of our resident owls. Leave with some ideas for making your yard or neighborhood a safer, more welcoming habitat for owls. The best part? You can do all this and still get home in time for the big game!  Cost is $5.  Registration is required!  Register for this event online, or call 734-997-1553.

Dancing Babies with Monica Higman: From 1 to 1:40, at the Traverwood Library Branch, Monica Higman, a teacher with First Steps Washtenaw, leads a program of music and motion.  This FREE event is intended for babies and preschoolers, up to age 5.

Banjo Betsy Beckerman and the Uke Party: From 2 to 2:45, at the Westgate Library Branch, families are invited to clap, tap and sing-along when the Uke Party joins storytellers Elizabeth and Laura with a variety of instruments and fun folk songs and stories for the whole family!

Read Along Dog: From 2 to 3 PM, at the Saline District Library, trained Therapaws reading dogs will be available for 15-minute reading appointments January-May. Practice reading with Summer! Registration is required; please stop by the Youth Desk or call 734-429-5450 ext. 3. Registration begins Jan. 22.

Guided Meditation for Kids: From 2 to 3, at the Pittsfield Library Branch, whether it is stress, anxiety, or the occasional moodiness, kids can benefit from quieting their mind as much as adults.  Local massage therapist and meditation leader Amy Tarrant will lead kids through a series of guided meditations to encourage calmness and more. Meditation at a young age plants the seed of a lifelong resource for dealing with stress or hard situations. At the end of the session children will have a chance to process what they experienced through artistic expression.  Attendees are welcome to bring a pillow or blanket with them for added comfort. Parents are encouraged to attend.  This FREE event is for students in grades 1 – 5.
