Weekend Adventures: December 22 – 24

Many of your weekends will be filled with family and friend, holiday gatherings.  Be sure to check if the open skates and open, indoor swimming activities are actually taking place this weekend, before planning out your weekend adventures!

 

FRIDAY Events (12/22): AM light wintry mix; highs in the mid-30s

Public Skate at Yost Ice Arena: From Noon to 1 PM, at Yost Ice Arena (entrance of State St.), cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children/students.  Skate rental is available for $3 as well.

Buhr Outdoor Ice Rink: Open Skate: From Noon to 2 PM (SPECIAL holiday hours!), at Buhr’s Outdoor Ice Rink (2781 Packard Rd.), there will be public skating available.  The facility has a heated lobby, vending, restrooms and four separate locker rooms for hockey.  Cost is $5 for adults and $4 for children.  Skate rentals is $3.  Skate learners are FREE.

FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 4:30 to 5:30 PM, at FitPoint (off Eisenhower), this class gets kids moving with cross training and strengthening, and a variety of explosiveness, agility, balance and flexibility exercises. It builds skills for any sport, or helps kids just be fit and healthy!  This class is intended for ages 7 – 13.  Check their calendar for when the class is available and there are drop-in classes too!

Kids Zumba: From 6:30 to 7:30 PM, at Peachy Fitness (2385 S. Huron), the Zumba® Kids program is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans boys & girls ages 6-13, where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This program features age-appropriate music and moves that get kids movin’ to the beat. It’s all about feeling fearless on the dance floor, reinforcing the idea that it’s okay to just be yourself and dance like no one’s watching!  Cost is $15 for a drop-in or 3 classes for $30. (LAST CLASS IS DEC. 17th)

The Year Without a Panto Claus: Theatre Nova: At 7:30 PM, at The Yellow Barn (416 W. Huron), Melissa Freilich directs the world premiere of Theatre Nova artistic director Carla Milarch and local composer R. Mackenzie Lewis’s musical panto. When Santa disappears after calling off Christmas, 2 of his elves try to find him in some unlikely locations. A panto is a British pantomime genre that blends children’s stories with a bit of vaudeville sensibility to create a raucous family entertainment. This production features appearances by local celebrities, and all the candy you can eat. Stars Ramona Burns, Lisa Michaels, and Scott Screws.   Tickets are $20 or $10 for children.

Family Mew-vie Night: From 7 to 9 PM, at Tiny Lion Lounge and Adoption Center (Jackson Rd.), you’re invited to cuddle up to cats and snack on popcorn while you watch a family friendly flick at the Tiny Lions cat café! All ages welcome. Youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult age 21 or older; maximum 3 youth per adult. You’re welcome to bring any pillows, sleeping bags or blankets you’d like to use! Guests may also bring in drinks and snacks of their choice. Popcorn and water are included. Family Swim at Goldfish Swim School:  From 7 PM to 8 PM, Goldfish Swim School (2107 W. Stadium Blvd.) offers family swim for all!  Cost is $5 per a person or $15 per a family.

Family Yoga: From 9:45 to 10:30 AM, at Peachy Fitness, this class is for parents and children, ages 3 -10.  Uplifting and supportive, this class provides gentle yet profound techniques to help build strength, flexibility and body awareness. Through mindfulness and self-acceptance, discover ways to de-stress from the pressures and expectations of daily life. Each class offers active asana (poses), balance work, breath work (pranayama) and relaxation.  Drop-ins are welcome or you can sign up for a five-week session.  Check out the dates with the link provided.  (LAST CLASS IS DECEMBER 17th, until the new year!)

The Little Scientist Club: From 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, in the Green Room (lower level) of the Hands-On Museum, their youngest visitors will explore their sense of wonder about the world through observation and hands-on activities, science-themed stories, make-and-take projects, and much more. Older siblings are welcome, too, and registration is not necessary.

Student Showcase: AIM High Flyers: At 11 AM, at the Hands-On Museum, you’re invited to join the Aim High Flyers for a day music and fun. This talented group of students from Aim High School in Farmington Hills plays a variety of popular and rock songs. Their mission is to bring awareness of neurodiversity through music. They will play 30 minute sets at 11 AM, 12 PM, and 2:30 PM.

Storytime with Linda Zimmer: Every Saturday, at 11 AM, join Linda Zimmer at Bookbound (1729 Plymouth Rd.) for a FREE story time.  This event is intended for children ages 6 and under!

Barnes and Noble Storytime: Santa’s Magic Key: at 11 AM, at Barnes and Noble, in this unforgettable holiday story, a boy realizes on Christmas Eve that his new house does not have a chimney. With the post office closed and Santa coming by the end of the night, he has no way of telling Santa. But when the boy finds a mysterious key, he’ll soon discover just how this key will solve his problem. Activities to follow.

FitPoint: Fit Kids and Conditioning: From 1 to 2 PM, at FITPoint (250 W. Eisenhower), this class encourages children, ages 7 to 13, to have fun and be creative with movement! This is an important age when coordination, balance, hand-eye coordination is developed!  Although there are class packages, drop-ins can pay $20 a class, AND the first week of classes is FREE for new visitors to FitPoint!  CLASSES START BACK IN THE WINTER!

Open Swim at Mack Pool: From 1 to 5 PM, at Mack Pool (715 Brooks St.), there is open swim to the public.  Admission to Mack Pool is $5/adult, $4 for youth (ages 4-17) & seniors (55+). Children 3 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.

Creature Encounters: Reindeer: From 1 to 5 PM, at The Creature Conservancy (4950 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd.), The Creature Conservancy is featuring Sven, the reindeer, for the month of December!  See the reindeer for a special presentation on the Stone Stage each Saturday and Sunday – at 2:00 PM and again at 4:00 PM.  Admission is $6 for children (2-12) and $8 for adults.  There are MANY other, exotic animals to visit as well!

SUNDAY Events (12/24): PM snow showers (snow for Christmas perhaps!); highs in the mid-20s

Critter House at Leslie Science and Nature center: From 10 AM t0 1 PM, at the Leslie Science and Nature Center (1831 Traver Rd.), you are invited to observe frogs, turtles, snakes, and more as they hop, crawl, and slither in their homes!  If you do not see an animal in the Critter House when you stop by they are either out educating a group or just taking turns in the exhibit room.  You can visit the critter house FREE of charge!  CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS EVE

Gingerbread Workshop: From Noon to 9 PM, at Dexter Creamery (Main St., Dexter), they are holding a Gingerbread Workshop every day from Sunday-Thursday from December 3-30. The workshop is drop-in.  Cost is $25/kit including a kit, unlimited icing, and a cup of toppings from their toppings bar. Additional toppings can be purchased. There are 7 house kits to choose from.
