Ann Arbor’s Indoor and Outdoor Skating Rinks

Ann Arbor has many skating rinks available to the public, with open skate times daily!  Check out an extensive list below, along with links for daily, ‘open skate’ schedules and admission costs!  During holidays and special events, the open skate times DO change from time to time.  Also be sure to check the rink’s website (or click on a rink’s link below), before attending an open skate.

Tips for skating with beginners and younger skaters:

  • Dress your little one in snow pants for extra cushion when they fall…which is bound to happen often!  You will also want to pack a hat and thin gloves/mittens
  • Prepare your little one that they WILL slip on the ice and that is part of the fun of skating and learning to skate.
  • Be sure to tie the skates tightly, so that your child’s ankles are best supported.
  • Expect to only be on the ice for 30 minutes or less
  • Encourage your child with a hot chocolate or other favorable treat, for after skating!

Ann Arbor Ice Cube: Located at 2121 Oak Valley Drive, the Ann Arbor Ice Cube offers Public Skate times almost every day of the week!  Adults are $4, youth (12 and under) are $3, and skate rental is $3.  Click on the above link to find the Pubic Skate schedule, as it changes monthly.

Veteran’s Memorial Park Indoor Ice Arena: Located at 2150 Jackson Ave., the complex includes a regulation-size rink.  A concession stand and vending are available in the main lobby, along with coin-operated lockers and storage units.  General Skate is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 1:20 to 2:45 PM, Thursdays, from 11 AM to 1 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 to 2:30 PM.  Admission is $5 for Adults, $4 for youth/seniors, and skate rental is $3.

Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena: Located at 2751 Packard Rd., the rink has a cooled subfloor that allows us to maintain ice even when it is over 50 degrees outside.  Activities include public ice skating, drop-in hockey and rental hours.  The facility has a heated lobby, vending, restrooms and four separate locker rooms for hockey. Skate rentals are available.  Admission is Adult $5, Youth (17 & under) $4, and skate rental $3. Skate learners are available as well.  Their public skating season runs from Nov. 5, 2016 to March 19, 2017, on the following days: Sunday, 3:15-5:30 PM.; Tuesday, 7:45-8:45 PM (half price and broom ball); Wednesday, 4:45-5:45 PM (half price and broom ball) and 7:15-8:45 PM.; Thursday and Friday, 7:15-8:45 PM; Saturday, 2:30-4:30 PM and 7:15-8:45 PM.  From December 23rd through January 6, we will offer an additional public skating time from noon until 2:00 PM.

Yost Ice Arena: Located at 1116 South State Street, Yost Ice Arena is home to the University of Michigan’s Hockey Team!  Public Skate gives you the chance to skate on the same ice as the Varsity Hockey Team and skate at one of the most recognized and iconic rinks in college hockey. Almost everyday they have either a Noon skate or a regular Public Skate. You can check the schedule for updated dates and times by on the above link.  Noon Public Skate is held Monday-Friday from 12pm to 12:50pm (subject to change).  Noon Skate is $3 and skate rental is $2.  Public Skate times (again, see schedule), $6 for adults and $4 for kids/students.  Skate rental is $3.

Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks:  Located at Allmendinger Park, Burns Elementary and Northside Park (STEAM School’s grounds), usage of the rinks is available free of charge, and the rinks are open to the public, during regular park hours (6 AM to 10 PM).  This is only the third or fourth winter that the natural, outdoor rinks have been constructed, and the idea was to create more rinks around the city, with easy access to the communities around them.  There is NOT skate rentals at the outdoor rinks or easily accessible bathrooms, so prepare in advance!  I’m not quite sure if the ice skating rinks are yet up and running or will be created this January…
